SPNPHX 2016

Image
Supernatural Convention at the Renaissance Glendale Hotel in Glendale, AZ. The convention was three glorious days June 10, 11, and 12. The master of ceremonies was the always sexy and musky Richard Speight, Jr. God, aka, Chuck, aka Rob Benedict kept the groove flowing with Louden Swain. Kim Rhodes was gobsmackingly amazing! Osric Chow was all smiles and dimples! I'd date him! Just sayin'! Matt "I'm your Superman. I'm your Supernatural Superman" Cohen. Travis Aaron Wade. Samantha Smith. Ruth Connell: she who steals hotel toiletrees. Misha Collins. ZOMG Misha Collins.  Mark Sheppard (whose voice is super sexy when you are in the same room with him). And, of course, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles.

The Devil You Know - May 23 Tempe, AZ The Marquee (setlist, video, review)

Image
So, the year I moved to Korea, something pretty awesome happened in Los Angeles. The Devil You Know came into being. Howard Jones says, "Long hair solo started writing music and sending it to me." I stumbled upon them covering the Hatebreed tour and was instantly agog! For those in the know, The Devil You Know consists of Howard Jones (Killswitch Engage), Francesco Artusato (All Shall Perish), John Sankey (Fear Factory), and Ryan Wombacher (Bleeding Through).

The Devil You Know are the first band in a trio of explosive circle pit heaven on earth. They are touring on their release They Bleed Red (Nuclear Blast). Howard hits the stage and paces like a captured lion. He's menacing and intense. Yet, has a wicked sense of humour for those hecklers that dare yell inane epitaphs. "Thanks white guy who always has something to say." The band is tight, like machine gun precision tight! John Sankey and Ryan Wombacher create a sonic boom that you can feel in your gut! Thi…

Heretique - De Non Existentia Dei (album review)

Image
Heretique
De Non Existentia Dei
Via Nocturna
Release: 26 March 2016

This is kinda happy to be death metal. It's, dare I say, jaunty! Listening to the tracks from Heretique's De Non Existentia Dei, make me happy. I have a loopy grin on my face and I'm banging my head along with the music. To be sure, De Non Existentia Dei is a heavy album. It's a veritable wall of sound. The vocals are Mojo Jojo worthy. But the tempo and timber fill me with glee! The songs are solid and concise. Sometimes they end before I want them to and I have to play them over again! This is the most awesome death black metal album. For those who are new to the genre or are curious, definitely start here with Heretique's De Non Existentia Dei. It's gobsmackingly done and done well. It's interesting and fun. It' oozes a delicious evil.

BUY IT NOW from the band!

Dead Register - Fiber (album review)

Image
Dead Register
Fiber
AVR Records
Release: 6 May 2016

With anticipation I spin Dead Register's Fiber from AVR Records. From the first heavy bass laden strings to the last, I'm sucking in and fully engaged. Fiber is a visceral experience. It's like the psychedelic experimental phase of the late 60s/early 70s. It's part Doors, part Tool, part Martha Graham's Lament.  Everything about Fiber makes you feel feels. From the haunting vocals to the intricate compositions, Dead Rigister's Fiber reaches into your soul and expands your consciousness. The tracks on Fiber go from heavy chugging to lyrical gambol to doomy goth and everything in between.  Fiber as a sound is akin to German Expressionism in film circa 1920s. Fiber is a world of light and shadow. It's lavish and wild and absurd. Fiber boasts a dark mood that you feel helpless to escape from, should you want to escape. I for one did not want to escape the clutches of Fiber.
