Megadeth - Dystopia (album review)

Dystopia
Universal Music Enterprises
Release: 22 January 2016

Yup, Megadeth has a new album. What can you say? It's Megadeth! The guitars are awesome. The soloing is top notch. The over all sound is wicked. Dystopia is Megadeth's fifteenth studio album and it delivers on the classic Megadeth sound. This is why people became Megadeth fans in the first place. Strong guitar sound! Dave once again delivers on composing and playing guitar riffs that are stand out. Dystopia's compositions layer the already strong guitar presence with bass riffs that are thick and lush. Dystopia is a Megadeth album that is going to be played on repeat for anyone who buys it.

Baklavaa - Dane On (album review)

Baklavaa
Dane On
Grimoire Records
Release: 04 March 2016

I wanted something different. Something new and fresh in terms of music. Some music that would expand what I thought about composition and tone. I took a look at Baklavaa's Dane On by Grimoire Records. The album releases on March 4 and it's something I think you may enjoy.

It kind of reminds you of Tool or Mars Volta. The music is free form and has a depth that is accessible. The compositions are unique and the execution is flawless. This is definitely an album for late nights, black lights, and sonic heights!

Cerebric Turmoil - Neural Net Breakdown

Release Date: November 13, 2015

Ten Songs.
Thirty-one minutes thirty-four seconds.
Total Mindfuck!

Ok, so this is so last year, but it just graced my inbox this week (January 19, 2016). A bit late to the music party. But I'm not gonna complain because this is the freshest most innovated thing I've heard since Primus. There is no way to put Cerebric Turmoil into any category except awesomeness. They create more than just music. They create a rich tapestry of aural experience.

The bass playing has some of the best funk rhythms combined with some serious metal guitar riffage overlaid by the deepest hellhound vocals ever. It sounds like they threw everything into a blender and it makes sweet sweet music. This is music Frank Zappa would be proud of! Neural Net Breakdown is not for casual listening. It's not a set it and forget it type of album. A lot happens in the half hour it graces your turn-table.

Loretta Lynn - Everything It Takes" (video)

Image
Loretta Lynn has a new album and this is good. I grew up listening to Loretta Lynn and it's awesome to know that almost 40 years later, she's still got it. This is country music in its rawest purest form. Loretta Lynn's voice is earnest and heartfelt. Her new song "Everything It Takes" is from her upcoming album Full Circle. Full Circle by Loretta Lynn drops March 4th on Legacy Records. If you are a pure country music aficionado, I recommend getting it!

Life of Agony signs with Napalm Records

Image
Seminal Brooklyn band Life of Agony signs with Napalm Records. The band, a staple of the Brooklyn, NY scene for decades, are planning to release a new album A Place Where There’s No More Pain (Napalm Records) later this year. A Place Where There’s No More Pain will be Life of Agony’s fifth album. The band hasn’t released new material in over ten years. The dearth of new material didn’t stop the band from doing a handful of dates in the last couple of years including festival appearances in Poland and Belgium, and New Jersey’s best, Starland Ballroom in Sayerville. The line up on A Place Where There’s No More Pain is the same as River Runs Red; Mina Caputo, Sal Ambruscato, Joey Z, and Alan Robert. BassistAlan Robert comments:
"I think our fans know that our music comes from a very real place of suffering, from all of us in the band. Many of our fans have told us over the years that sharing our personal struggles has been cathartic for them in healing the pain in their own lives. Th…

Stigmata - The Ascetic Paradox (album review)

Stigmata
The Ascetic Paradox
October 17th, 2015
Independent

I got Stigmata's album The Ascetic Paradox today (January 7) and was trippin balls! It's wicked cool! It opens with some serious bass riffage. It's like funk with a punk twist. But that didn't last long. It segued into this heavy metal psychosis. Suresh de Silva, the lead singer reminds me of equal parts Dio and Bobby Blotzer. His vocals are deep and strong - like coffee. I was not expecting this from a band from Sri Lanka. But then, the only thing I know about Sri Lanka is that Duran Duran made a bunch of videos there and it's wicked pretty. There is nothing "pretty" about The Ascetic Paradox. The compositions are mind blowing. They are blending funk, progressive, groove, metal, and tribal and it works! But hell, Stigmata's been around for fifteen years. I'm agog that more people don't know the bass prowess of Lakmal Chanaka Wijayagunarathna. He's amazing. And the twin guitars of Te…

Violent Creek Signs Toxic Waltz

Image
First week of January and Violent Creek Records have already made a noteworthy signing. Violent Creek is helmed by everyone’s favourite thrasher Burkhard Schmitt of Hate Squad. The hardest working man in thrash has signed Munich’s Toxic Waltz. The German thrashers will release their second album, “From A Distant View” on March 18 of this year.

I spun some tracks from their first release, “A Decade of Pain”, and what struck me was that they are a nice blend of Exodus, Hate Squad, and Over Kill. It’s not a new sound, just new lyrics by a different band. The twin guitar attack of Jimi and Alex provide plenty of air guitar moments mixed with some serious shredding. The overall tone of the music evokes circle pit moshing and plenty of standing on the rail fist pumping headbanging action. The more you listen to Toxic Waltz the more comfortable you get. You just meld with the music and become one with it; it’s as second nature to you as breathing.

Toxic Waltz spend much of 2015 touring Euro…
