Serpentine Path - Emanations (album)

Image
Serpentine Path has a new album out and it's a depressing lulling affair. But then, that's the true essence of doom metal is it not? 'Emanations' is to be released on May 27th on Relapse Records . Upon listening, time truly slows down. Serpentine Path draws you in and then slowly smothers the life out of you. From the slow and laborious "Essence of Heresy" to the crushing weight of "Torment", Serpentine Path is the banner-man for doom metal. 'Emanations' is just heavy and oppressive. It's a slow trod through bleak and darkness. 'Emanations' sucks the life and joy from the room and leaves you staring off into space.  "Treacherous Waters" is another track that just drowns you. Listening to "Treacherous Waters" offers you little hope of escape. The song coalesces in the deeper reaches of your body and the blackness grows to inhabit every part of you. As a doom album 'Emanations' is perfect. Serpentin

Greenleaf - Trails and Passes (album)

Image
Greenleaf 's about to release a new album and all the music fans rejoice. And make no mistake, this is an album for those who love music. It's smooth. It's jazzy. It's heavy. It's something that gets you dancing about the flat. Loads of good things come out of Sweden and Greenleaf 's 'Trails and Passes' due to be released on May 13 is definitely one of them. It's hard to write about the album because it's easy to get lost in. The riffs are engaging. The drumming and bass are wicked groovilicious. The vocals are like butter! "Oceans Deep" and "Humans" are heavy and grungy. The tracks just ooze wickedness. There is an inherent movement in the tracks that make it impossible to sit still. There is something mystical about "With Eyes Wide Open". It's like a psychedelic head trip. "Equators" has cowbell. How can you not like a song with more cowbell? 'Trails and Passes' is full of so much groove it

Dwellers - Pagan Fruit (album)

Image
OMG.. This is just amazing. This song has such swagger and balls. It's sultry. Yes, sultry! If ever there was a song that just came together perfectly, "Spirit in the Staircase" does. The song is from Salt Lake City's Dwellers . "Spirit of the Staircase" is on the upcoming album Pagan Fruit . Pagan Fruit makes its debut on May 6th via Small Stone Recordings. This is a must have album for all those that like their music with some mystery and depth. "Rare Eagle" is another track that just smolders. It's a maudlin track. It evokes hot and steamy nights on a veranda. It has a darkness that is hard to penetrate. "Rare Eagle" evokes the best of the Doors . While "Creature Comforts" has shades of Pink Floyd . Pagan Fruit is a doomy, classic heavy metal album that is ethereal and sultry and everything black and dark in the world. It's a mesmerizing album that must be listened to to be believed. Ruins / Usnea 7" split

Image
Because guitars are good: I give you the Ruins / Usnea 7" split. I'd say this is for people that like their music heavy, gritty, and slightly psychotic. It has a creepyness factor of 11. It's something that would play in the background of Supernatural. If Dean Winchester moved to the 2000s and embraced modern music, this is what he'd listen to. Ruins contribution to the 7" split "Discrimin" is heavy in an oppressive type of way. The guitars bore into your soul. "Discrimin" sheds some of the heaviness and meanders into a wild cacophony of sound that is both pleasing and scary. So much happens in this song, it's impossible to just listen to it once. I suggest listening over and over and over again.. in a darkened room... on 11. Usnea 's "Only The End of the World" is just that. A lamentation of the ending. It's depressing and bleak. It's truly doom metal at it's finest. The 7" split won't be released

Trans Am - Volume X (album)

Image
Synth pop, video game music, psychedelic funk. These are words that come to mind when I listen to the new Trans Am album 'Volume X'. 'Volume X' will be released on May 23 on Thrill Jockey via Rocket Distribution . 'Volume X' is a trippy 80s laser fest of aural shenanigans. "Reevaluations" is a song that makes you want to get out a glow stick and dance. It's much Miami Vice and yes, Trans Ams with glowing rims. 'Volume X' isn't so much an album, but more an experience. This is what you listen to when you want to just let go; no preconceptions, no worries, no box. "K Street" is another track that will be on heavy rotation at any dance party I host. It's trippy in a good way. But oh, so short. "Backlash" goes in a completely different direction. It's frenetic. It's bold. It's industrial. It's a mindfuck. It's what Motorhead and Ministry would sound like in a mash up if you were on a very i
