Zoroaster + Skeletonwitch + Kvelertak at Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia

Johnny Brenda's, Philadelphia, PA
23 October 2011

On a nondescript neighbourhood street two blocks from an elevated train sits a bar. The bartender is very nice and helpful. Upstairs is a gem of a live venue. It's intimate - bordering on claustrophobic. The stage is almost three feet high and is hella small. There is no pit area for photographers. You take your chances in the crowd. So no 3 and out rule. Many other photogs used flash. So begrudgingly, as the lighting was not the best, I did too. The sound is assaulting and the sound board and area looked cobbled together.

All three bands played to a packed house. For Zoroaster's set, all I could hear was drums and guitar and a funky distorted bass. I saw a singer, but the mix not being the best, barely heard him. What I did hear was mind blowing psychedelia. Zoroaster are that good live. A three piece form Atlanta, GA, they tore the place up! They were Tommy Acid Queen trippy with a groove that didn't stop.

As for Skeletonwitch - I don't know how they sound on disk, but live they frakking kick major ass. To look at them you'd think hearty Scandinavian Death Metal Band! True metal happiness! But they are actually soft spoken, polite gentlemen from Ohio. Ohio, USA. Not a drop of viking blood in them. Go figure! They have a new album out called Forever Abomination. It's a definite must buy! Fans seem to completely LOVE them! A pit broke out in the small space that was the floor and engulfed the entire area! There were even a few stage divers! Who says metal is dead?

Kvelertak closed the night and what a night it was! Kvelertak is an awesome Norwegian band that sings in Norwegian. SKOL!!! They've got three guitar players and they just produce an intense wall of sound. I've no bloody idea what they are singing about, but it makes me headbanging happy!

Pomona, California thrashers BONDED BY BLOOD have announced the addition of JESSIE SANCHEZ to the band as their new bassist.

SANCHEZ replaces former bassist JERRY GARCIA, who left the band earlier this year. The newly completed line-up are currently writing songs for a new album, which is tentatively due to be recorded in early 2012.

The band have issued the following statement:

"We are thrilled to announce that our good friend Jessie Sanchez has joined the Bonded By Blood family! It was a long and devious search to find the right dude for the job, but we are proud to have him in the band slapping the bass for us! Album #3 is sounding killer so far and we can't wait to hit the studio some time in January! Cheers to Metal!"

Left to right: MAURO GONZALEZ (vocals), CARLOS REGALADO (drums), JESSIE SANCHEZ (bass), JUAN JUAREZ (guitars)

Ah hah!!! ajajajajajajajajaaaaa Another kick ass offering by Riveal Sons!

RIVAL SONS frontman JAY BUCHANAN recently commented:

"Just like in the last video, there was no green screen used for this one. We actually did drive a Cadillac through outer space with a bunch of hot, naked chicks in the backseat. I haven't seen a final edit yet because they're trying to lower it to at least an 'R' rating. We'll see if that actually happens."

Diamond Plate at the Gramercy Theatre 18 October 2011

Oh yeah, I like Diamond Plate. From the moment I got Generation Why? I was floored. It's a frakking awesome cornucopia of ear bleeding head banging goodness. Generation Why? makes the evil DJ in my brain very very happy. Don't take my word for it. Konrad Kupiec explains why YOU should buy Generation Why?

Konrad: "If you want really energetic music and you're into heavy metal it's definitely the album for them. We really wanted to try and capture something that hasn't been felt in metal in a long time. The songs, the energy, that's the old school thing about the album it's got the same vibe as the old records but with a modern kind of approach to it. Coz we are young and we are from this day and age, so. There is nothing retro about it except the energy."

Vic: What was the writing process like for Generation Why?

Konrad: "Three of the songs were on a previous EP that we did when we were a lot younger, so we just kind of redid those songs and worked on arrangements and all that stuff. The other songs just came together thru jamming and just a lot of constant improvising of the songs and stuff. We did a few months of pre-production with those songs and once we entered the studio it was about ten days of strait recording and busting it out, so."

Vic: That's fast!

Konrad: "Yes, with small budgets these days especially for underground metal it's kind of like, you have to get in, get out and really have your shit together to really accomplish what we wanted to at least."

Diamond Plate are currently on tour with Warbringer, Landmine Marathon, and Lazarus AD. I caught up with them in NYC at the Gramercy and spent a goodly half hour headbanging and just generally being happy happy!

After the show, Konrad Kupiec - the guitar player, tried to explain to me 10 Reasons Why he and Diamond Plate are better than Zombies. Was not easy.... He had a little help from Adam from Warbringer.

Konrad: 'OK, let's see. I'm gonna pull this one out of my ass.'
1. We are a lot better looking.
2. We aren't dead.
3. We won't turn YOU into a Zombie.
4. People would have a better time with us than a Zombie.
Let's bring Adam from Warbringer in on this one!
Adam: 5. You can run.
6. You can play awesome music.
7. You smell better!
8. You've probably been to more metal shows than a Zombie.
9. You have less holes in your clothes than Zombies.
Konrad: 9. I'm a lot better dressed than Zombies.
10. We have nice hair.
(I must concur. They do indeed have nice hair.)

Rival Son's song TORTURE in movie Real Steel

Californian blues-rockers RIVAL SONS have had one of their songs featured in the new Hollywood movie, Real Steel.

The band's track "Torture", taken from their self-titled digital EP, can be heard during the movie, which stars Hugh Jackman and is set in the near future where robot boxing is a top sport.

RIVAL SONS frontman JAY BUCHANAN comments:

"When I wrote this song, the last thing I had in mind was a boxing robot fighting a bull. I was actually envisioning Elvira wrestling a bear, but I guess this will do until Dreamworks buys my script."

Rites of Ceremonial Embalm'ment is a gutteral funeral dirge. It plods and sludges thru a tad over five minutes. It's a cacophony of noise. It's discordant. It's a black and white Halloween horror movie; full of shadow and layers of fright and chaos. Guitarist, bassist, vocalist Ghoat has this to say about O’ Hell, Shine in Thy Whited Sepulchres. 'Expect pure darkness. Take everything we have done before and turn it up. More death, more gloom, more decay. Guitars will crush, vocals will possess, and the atmosphere ofEncoffination will strangle you. We are adding more texture in the riffs, more things to take you by the throat and steal your breath.' The album comes out November 15 on the Polish label Selfmadegod Records. The album is a concept album, an abstract vision that encompasses the 'death of the human form to the sacrifice of flesh into the Earth.' The album's visual theme is based on "Finis Gloriae Mundi," a 17th century painting by Juan De Valdes Leal.

O' Hell, Shine In Thy Whited Sepulchres Track Listing:
1. Sacrum Profanum Processionali
2. Rites of Ceremonial Embalm'ment
3. Ritual Until Blood
4. Elegant in Their Funebrial Cloaks, Arisen
5. Crypt of His Communal Devourment
6. Washed and Buried
7. Pall of Unrequited Blood
8. Annunciation of the Viscera
Elektrokutioner - drums (Decrepitaph, Beyond Hell, Father Befouled, Scaremaker, Festered, etc.)
Ghoat - guitars/bass/vocals (Father Befouled, Festered, Vomitchapel, etc.)

Mondo props to an amazing actor! The excerpt below is from his blog on his official website. He get's the seal of approval by the man that is my heart and soul, Mr. George Takei!

when i found out that jamey rodemeyer killed himself - i felt deeply troubled. but when i found out that jamey rodemeyer had made an it gets better video only months before taking his own life - i felt indescribable despair. i also made an it gets better video last year - in the wake of the senseless and tragic gay teen suicides that were sweeping the nation at the time. but in light of jamey's death - it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it - is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality. our society needs to recognize the unstoppable momentum toward unequivocal civil equality for every gay lesbian bisexual and transgendered citizen of this country. gay kids need to stop killing themselves because they are made to feel worthless by cruel and relentless bullying. parents need to teach their children principles of respect and acceptance. we are witnessing an enormous shift of collective consciousness throughout the world. we are at the precipice of great transformation within our culture and government. i believe in the power of intention to change the landscape of our society - and it is my intention to live an authentic life of compassion and integrity and action. jamey rodemeyer's life changed mine. and while his death only makes me wish that i had done this sooner - i am eternally grateful to him for being the catalyst for change within me. now i can only hope to serve as the same catalyst for even one other person in this world. that - i believe - is all that we can ask of ourselves and of each other.

Zach Quinto can be seen in Margin Call, in theatres on October 21 and the comedy Girl Walks Into a Bar.

IMMORTALS 11.11.11

I am mad. Mad as hell. Blerg!!!! I get PR emails all the time. Various peoples and companies wanting me to review something or spread the good word about something. As you know, I cover a LOT of comicons; it's the Uber Geek in me. Two days ago, I get the email... blah blah blah come by our booth blah blah blah artwork blah blah blah new movie and a link to download promo materials. Now, I'm hip deep in Comicon scheduling and writing so I file it away for later. The movie has Mickey Rourke in it. #winning. Henry Cavill and Stephen Dorff double#winning. So I'm moseying along the expansive floor of the Javitz center when I stumble upon the IMMORTALS booth. I think I stumbled upon my jaw as it smacked the floor and I tripped over it. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!!! A cornucopia for the eyes. What greeted me was the most amazing gobsmacking artwork by Dennis Calero and Rafael Kayanan to name a few. The artwork was hung on crisp white walls with overhead angled lighting. Very posh. Rafael Kayanan was on hand to autograph prints.

The Immortals graphic novel is published under Archaia's Black Label. The graphic novel is not a direct adaption of the film. It is an original book of short stories set within the world and mythology of the film. The book is divided into two halves: GODS and MANKIND. Each half tells five (5) short stories expanding on key elements found in the film. You don't have to read the graphic novel to understand the film. The book is just an added bonus. It goes deeper into the mythology found in the film. Mind you, it's not an official prequel, all of the events in the graphic novel do happen before the events of the film.

You can get the graphic novel here: WC #11 Immortals: Gods and Monsters

Release Date: November 11, 2011

LOL White Room: 02B3 is pushing the final frontier, as it were, of filmmaking. The FIRST EVER movie filmed to be a full immersion 360 degree experience. Yowza! White Room: 02B3 was written by incomparable Tory Mell. Produced by Tory Mell and Kim Evey and directed by Greg Aronowitz. “Roddenberry has always been a pioneer in pushing the envelope, and broadening the scope of entertainment,” Greg Aronowitz says of the challenge. “They've given me an amazing opportunity to be one of the first directors to navigate the challenges of creating a 360 degree narrative film.”

“Because we follow in footsteps of a luminary like Gene Roddenberry, we recognize science fiction as a methodology via which we can explore the human condition from every potential angle,” says executive producer Rod Roddenberry of the project. “It, therefore, feels fitting that with White Room: 02B3, we are literally pushing cinematic boundaries by providing a 360 degree view of our characters and our story for audiences to experience and enjoy.”

This new experimental film stars Breckin Meyer, Tamlyn Tomita, David Blue, Rachel True, Tony Janning and Milynn Sarley, the cast of WHITE ROOM: 02B3 spans a wide range of talent who are thrilled to be a part of methodological and technological history. “They are all interacting through ground-breaking technology,” says Aronowitz. “It brings an exciting amount of energy to the project.”

Roddenberry Entertainment plan is to have it in film festivals in 2012 and then roll it out in the 700 dome theatres in the USA. Go round to and sign up for their mailing list.

Andrea Romano "If I had my choice, Kevin would always be Batman."

Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky at NYFF2011

The New York Film Festival has many gems as festival goers are aware. October 13th brought HBO Film's Directors Dialogues with Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky of the Paradise Lost Trilogy. Monday, the film was screened at the NYFF with Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley, Jr., and Jason Baldwin in attendance. "Monday was magical... words can't describe" was Joe Berlinger's description of the night. The sentiment was echoed by his partner Bruce Sinofsky, "I was flying." Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory is the culmination of fifteen years and three films documenting the now infamous West Memphis 3 case. However, the story of Joe and Bruce begins some 10 years prior. The duo met in 1986. Apparently, Joe had a very comfy couch in his office, so Bruce was there. On the couch. Bruce did leave the confines of the comfy couch to edit Outrageous Taxi Stories (1989), a 25 minute short directed by Joe. And so the journey begins...

How does one go about defining the journey of documentary filmmaking, the process as it were? " giant spectrum of filmmaking. It's all storytelling. It's all highly subjective. We are verite filmmakers." Joe Berlinger explained to a captive audience. "Film life as it unfolds in front of the camera. You never know where the story will go." In the early 90s Berlinger and Sinofsky went to upstate New York and the result was 1992's Brother's Keeper. Brother's Keeper was a documentary about the murder trial of Delbert Ward. Both Berlinger and Sinofsky had read about the case in the newspapers and both agreed it was an important story to tell. Says Bruce Sinofsky, "We felt this was something that would make our careers." He goes on to say that nobody wanted to distribute the first film so they had to distribute it themselves. This led Sinofsky and Berlinger to set up their own production company. "We try so hard to give people an ear" says Sinofsky.

The end of the twentieth century brought some transition and change to the duo as they went their separate ways and worked on solo projects. The fan favourite Some Kind of Monster was actually started by Joe alone and was only intended to be a "small project." Bruce was brought in when that was no longer the case. As contentious as things were on screen for the members of Metallica, it was equally so for Berlinger and Sinofsky whose relationship mirrored that of drummer Lars Ulrich and singer/guitarist James Hetfield. The "existential and creative crisis" brought Joe and Bruce back together. "It was really healing for Bruce and I", says Joe. Both he and Bruce relate that when they had finished filming Metallica's therapy sessions, they would go back to the hotel or restaurant and talk about their own relationship. "It's a blessing I met him," says Bruce. "We have a way of communicating without saying anything."

Their simpatico relationship produces great documentaries. Paradise Lost 3 premiered in Toronto, albeit with a different ending than is now being shown. The film was locked in August of 2011. The plan was to have the film at the Toronto and New York film festivals and on TV by November in time for the evidentiary hearing in December. That was the plan. But on August 19, 2011 - Echols, Misskelly, and Baldwin were released. (About bloody time!) The film couldn't be re-cut in time for Toronto, but the new ending was in place for the premier in New York on October 10th.

The Paradise Lost Trilogy has been a long road for both directors and followers of the case. It is unusual for an audience to stay involved with the subjects of a documentary, let alone a series of documentaries spanning well over a decade. The support for Echols, Misskelly, and Baldwin by total strangers has been continuous and amazing. But now it's time to "put the camera down and let these guys live their lives. I love these guys! I'm amazed at the strength they showed." says Bruce Sinofsky. According to, Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory will air in January 2012.

LIKE Paradise Lost 3 on Facebook to stay up to date on the film festivals where the movie will be played.

RELICSEED opening for Korpiklaani December 7th in LA

What happens when you are the first of your kind to do something? Fireworks? Parade? Party Hats and streamers? December 7th, 2011 marks the first ever show Latvian metal band RELICSEED will play in the USA. They've decided to start the Domestic Devil tour in a big way... playing at the Key Club in Los Angeles opening for Korpiklaani! Talk about a big splash! Relicseed played a handful of dates in the Midlands of the UK in September and are ready to kill it in America. After gigging around Latvia, the band has this to say: Karlis, 'The metal scene in Riga actually is getting better and better – people are paying much more attention to the technical side of things, which results in higher quality gear, better performances and an overall sense of what they’re trying to achieve.' Andrej has this to say, 'There are a lot of metal bands in Riga, but most of them are underground bands, just rehearsing and playing small gigs in some clubs just for fun. Although there are few great bands with potential, but it is very hard to grow as a metal musician in Latvia. '

And grow RELICSEED will - by playing in LA and San Francisco in December! What are the guys looking forward to in the coming months, especially with two very big USA shows?

Edgars: I think this will be a great psychological exercise for us firstly because we`ve never spent more than 4 days in on place together (laughing). But seriously – we have something to say, we have music and we have a great joy to everything we do. I look forward to bring Latvian attitude to heavy metal outside this place – the wider, the better.

Kārlis: In the coming months we will have to learn what it’s like to be on the road, what to expect and how to live with each other for such a long period of time. This is a little scary at this point, to be honest. But otherwise, I am looking forward to a row of great shows, meeting new people and having an excellent time doing just what I love.

You can get your tickets for RELICSEED in LA at the Key Club here:

Or if you are in the San Francisco area - buy tickets at the door for December 8th at Kimo's. Relicseed is the premier band for the 2011 San Francisco Metallibash celebrating Metallica's Three Decades of Damage!!!

EXHUMED start second leg tour later this month!

Goregrinding metal gods EXHUMED are readying to kick off the second leg of their Back From The Dead And Ready To Party North American Tour later this month. Set to commence on October 27 in Amarillo, Texas, the band will be touring in support of their All Guts, No Glory full-length released in July via Relapse Records.

Commented vocalist/guitarist Matt Harvey of the oncoming trek: "We're fully chuffed to hit the road with Goatwhore and Havok on the second leg of our Back From The Dead And Ready To Party North American tour. It's been way too long since we've played out on the East Coast. I can promise you a full-on autopsy holocaust doss of epic proportions! We'll be playing a ton of stuff from the new record, as well as all the moldy oldies the slaughtercult has come to expect, so come on out, grab a beer, and get ready to rage! See you there!"

Relicseed on Bandcamp

I came across this awesome Latvian band RELICSEED quite by accident. A happy accident to be sure. The music is hard and heavy and fun and sometimes even makes the hair on my arms stand on end. Check out their cover of Kiss From a Rose on debut EP 60 Minutes of a Dream. Amazing! Both the debut EP and new single can be found on Says vocalist Edgars Ravkovskis on covering the Seal song, "This was my idea because I simply respect and evaluate this man as one of the most touching and talented singers. Yes, It was also an ambition and challenge for me: “You can sing it right this, aigh?!”
But the main reason for doing any coversong – it is possible to learn a lot as a musician."

Their next upcoming gig in the USA is in San Francisco at Kimo's in December. I can't wait to see them.

The Good, The Bad, The Undead

The Good, The Bad & The Undead! A western tale with a twist!

A drifter who stumbles upon the silver mining town of Romero and find himself thrown into a situation even the most hardened warrior of the west has never faced. He must team up with the remaining survivors of the town to fend off the hordes of the undead and work together to escape the growing zombie menace.

How will I help to make this happen?

We want to get you guys involved as much as we can! Everything we've done to date is for our fans and we couldn't do it without the incredible support you've shown so far.

Your pledge will go towards making this project as epic as possible and its got to start somewhere. The scale we're planning is huge, one that is rarely seen on YouTube so we need to make a pilot episode, a proof of concept to show the world what we can do with your support.

Make your pledge here!

Money raised for the pilot will go towards creating the best cinematic experience possible, putting together a crack shot crew, gathering costume and props, and most importantly the location. We will also be able to get pro level equipment to shoot, such as the Red camera, giving us cinema quality picture and use of Steadicam enabling us to shoot in new and exciting ways and really give the pilot its own signature look. Additionally we will be getting a dedicated sound team and a great cinematographer to crank this project up to 11.

Whats next?

It's simple - we need to hit our goal in order to produce this pilot episode. Check out the rewards we've created just for you and help spread the word in getting this made. The more people that see it the better chance we have of reaching our goal. Anything over the goal will help to make it more epic & towards the development of the series as a whole.

Can I get in touch with you?

Of course, as above we do this for our fans and we're always open to discuss projects.
