Metallica and Lou Reed: The View

Image
The View is spoken word set to blistering guitar riffs. It's avant garde experimental music for the new millenia. It's heavy and sludgy like early Black Sabbath. It's 50s beat poetry for the metal crowd. The first release is like a tent revival. Lou Reed preaching to convert you interspersed with James Hetfield's in your face singing. The juxtaposition of spoken word and metal vocals is mesmerizing. It flows seamlessly from one to the other until the listener is whipped into a frenzy of devoted belief. The guitar solos are psychotic bordering on psychedelic. This album is not for the faint of heart. It's not for the casual Metallica fan. It will push the listener to the limits. I'm sure many Metallica fans will whinge and complain about it - but I think this disk will show even more musical growth from a band that has been around for thirty years. Metallica has never followed trends no more than Lou Reed has ever followed trends. And I was around when Lou Reed

Japanese Maiden Event Shirt Update

Image
The terrific support from our fans has resulted in over £36,000 being raised in proceeds from the sales of the Japanese event shirt through the Iron Maiden shop and a retail version of the shirt which was sold in the USA. The band have channelled all their profits and royalties into the fund, which has been donated to the Japanese Red Cross charity. We’d like to thank everyone who took part in this initiative in support of our fellow Maiden fans in Japan and the many others affected by the tsunami. -From the Iron Maiden website

Pyrrhon to re-release An Excellent Servant but a Terrible Master

Image
It's metal beat poetry. It's Jack Kerouac for the 2011s. Angry. Frenetic. If Gil Scott-Heron was a metal head, he'd write and perform like Doug Moore, lead singer for Pyrron. The lyrics are raw and mind-blowing. Undigested truth. Alex Cohen is a beast on the drums. His style is a conflagration of jazz and metal and punk. You hear subtle nuances in his drumming that seems to defy the man only having two arms. Erik Malave is a perfect complement on bass. Dylan DiLella on guitar creates discord and disjunct. The music mirrors the cacophony of New York City in the 70s and 80s. The music is free form and dips and soars with pyrotechnic intensity. Without warning the music crashes into thrash / death metal territory. Doug Moore's vocals become evil and menacing. Dylan's guitar work is like nails on a chalk board, screeching and toe curling. Originally self-released in digital format only in February 2011, the album is getting a new audience via a physical release by

Rwake new album REST

Image
I started out by thinking this would be a simple review of a new album. I put on REST by Rwake and within 2 minutes was in a zone! Whiskey - Tango - Foxtrot! I had to put it on again from the beginning just so I could make coherent sentences. The album is atmospheric. It evokes visuals and colours and moods. From start to finish it's like an apocalyptic soundtrack. Mad Max. Bladerunner. Dune. It's futuristic and baroque all in one. The drums dominate the mix and they are relentless! We can blame the dude named "Jeff" for this sonic bombast! The 11 minute opus It Was Beautiful but Now It's Sour have some guitar playing by "Kiffin" and "Gravy" that is gobsmackly beautiful and scary and moving. Ten minutes into the track it gets eerily scary and I don't recommend listening with late at night with the lights out if you are prone to get creeped out easily. I'm loving it! I truly can't believe these guys are from Ar-Kansas (or Arkan

DIAMOND PLATE "AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS" Video

Image
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE I've loved this band since I got their disk Generation Why? to review. They are frakking awesome! Generation Why? has been on heavy rotation since then! It's perfect shredding ear bleeding metal from start to finish! DIAMOND PLATE hails from Chicago and have the same intensity as a Chicago winter or the Bear's defensive line. Brutal! They have released an official music video for their track, "At the Mountains of Madness". The track is from the band's recently-released debut album, GENERATION WHY?. Do you not have Generation Why? Why not? GENERATION WHY? is available now on CD in Europe at http://bit.ly/mVHtIi or in North America at http://bit.ly/owOGVS The album is also available on iTunes at http://bit.ly/nRbT14 "At the Mountains of Madness" was recorded with director DAVE VORHES in the band's hometown of Chicago, Illinois. Debut Issue of New "Star Trek" Comic Sells Out!!

Image
Within hours of release, IDW Publishing and CBS Consumer Products announced that STAR TREK #1, the debut issue of a brand new chapter in the new Star Trek universe, is sold out. Guided by Star Trek writer/producer Roberto Orci, this new series explores the vast implications of the alternate timeline created by the 2009 film, and the first issue is going fast. “Movies cost money. Lots and lots of money,” said Orci. “But comics give us unlimited budgets to take the crew of the Enterprise farther than they've ever been. Join us!” Star Trek fans nationwide are encouraged to check with their local comic retailer to get their copy of STAR TREK #1. A second printing of this hot debut issue is being rushed to comic stores and will feature a variant cover. The adventures of the Starship Enterprise continue with the new cast from the film as they embark on missions that re-imagine select stories from the original television series, along with new threats and characters never seen befo

What? No love for Stan Lee?

Image
Some military personnel are upset that comics legend Stan Lee received the Honorable Order of St. Barbara award in July at Comic-Con International, as the award is “traditionally reserved for career cannon cockers in the Army and Marine Corps who have made their mark on the field artillery or air defense communities.” While the award credited Lee, who served stateside in the Army during World War II, with writing “several training manuals and films for the artillery and all other branches of the service,” the co-creator of the Fantastic Four and other Marvel properties said he didn’t recall ever doing so. A spokesman for Maj. Gen. David Halverson, commander of the Army Field Artillery Center at Fort Sill, Okla., who signed off on the award, said it “was given to a former soldier and WWII veteran whose contributions, both in the Army and beyond, are in keeping with and representative of all the high standards of achievement and selfless service associated with the Honorary Order of Sai

Misantropic "Raise the Gallows"

Image
Misantropic "Raise the Gallows" Vinyl only release: Insomnia This track reminds me of Motorhead and has shades of Anthrax. It's fast paced metal. Misantropic sports some excellent drumming. The vocals are a little thin but the punk rock metal vibe makes up for it. They remind me of X, but light. Fek me, I love this track. The guitar solo is blistering. It's another track worthy of some circle pits! So the album itself was mixed and mastered in Umea, Sweden in May 2010 and remastered in January 2011 for vinyl. Gerda is on vocals. Eken and Rille on guitar. Drums is Zoid (no lie) and Bass guitar is Matte. You can order the disk directly from the band - but they warn that postage from Sweden is expensive. But it's worth it for such ear bleeding music. Order INSOMNIA here!!! Or in the USA from Southern Lord Records store.

Avalanche - new single from Black Cobra

Image
"Avalanche" by Black Cobra album: Interval This track is frenetic. It has so much movement and forward motion. Jason Landrian displays some excellent guitar work. It is literally a wall of sound. For two guys, Jason and Rafael Martinez are very tight and play old school style thrash that evokes circle pits and loads of stage diving. Jason's vocals are delivered with machine gun precision. I look forward to these guys live. Interval, Black Cobra's fourth album promises to be devastating. It drops in North America on October 11th. You can pre-order the album here: http://www.blackcobra.net/ And catch them on tour with Kyuss Lives and The Sword: http://www.blackcobra.net/tour.html

Dave Matthews Band Caravan: Randall's Island

Image
OMG!! This was my 7th Dave show this year and of course it was stellar! My favourite part of the day was at 3pm(ish) when Dave and Tim hit the stage for an acoustic set. Sure, they did this in Atlantic City, but that was a month ago! LOL The setlist: 1. Eh Hee 2. So Damn Lucky 3. Where Are You Going 4. Typical Situation 5. Save Me 6. Oh 7. Tim Reynolds Solo 8. Little Red Bird and 9. Dancing Nancies Of course, Dave and Tim were amazing. When are they not? Two guitar virtuosos sharing a stage is mind blowing. They are deft of hand and strong of wit! Even acoustically, Dave and Tim can bring the house down. It's true musicianship. Here are some videos I shot of the tunage. Enjoy!! Eh Hee So Damn Lucky Typical Situation Where Are You Going

Jagermeister Tour with UNEARTH and Chimaira

Since the band’s genre defining release The Oncoming Storm, UNEARTH has continuously crisscrossed the globe, becoming one of the hardest – and most consistent – touring bands in all of hard rock. With Darkness in the Light, their fifth full-length, the quintet have delivered their most honest, powerful, and compelling statement to date, driving a fist into the collective gut of every image-obsessed metal band currently cluttering up the landscape, and setting a new standard when it comes to marrying precision brute force and exhilarating melody. Earning themselves Top 200 Billboard Chart entries for all four of the band’s Metal Blade releases (The Oncoming Storm, III: In the Eyes of Fire, The March, and Darkness in the Light), UNEARTH is once again prepared to take the world by storm when they hit the road this fall with Cleveland, Ohio’s Chimaira. The tour will be joined by Athens, Ohio’s Skeletonwitch and Las Vegas, Nevada’s Molotov Solution. Jägermeister, the brand that’s syno

Sabaton at The Gramercy Theatre in NYC

Image
This was my first SABATON show but it won't be my last. I was gobsmackingly blown away by this band. They have everything you need to have a rocking good time! Joakim Broden had that "Village People Cop" thing happening and it took a lot for me to get over it and remember this is a Swedish band. But the 70s are strong in my midichlorians. He's got an amazing set of pipes and can work a stage. Reminded me of a metal Freddy Mercury. The bass player, Par Sundstrom had a perpetual smile on his face. It was quite infectious and you realize he was happy to be in NYC, happy to be playing on stage, and just generally, .... happy! Oskar and Ricard are responsible for the twin guitar attack. Daniel Myhr on keyboards and Daniel Mullback round out this Swedish Viking Metal Band. The band has been around since 1999! I feel quite late to the SABATON party, but Joakim promised that this stop in NYC (their second ever) won't be the last and a headlining tour of the USA may be on

DORO at the Gramercy in NYC 2011

Image
When I was a teen I wanted to grow up and be Siouxsie Sioux, Stevie Nicks, Tina Turner, Doro Pesch.  Amazing women with style and pure rock power. I can't sing my way out of a paper bag - but I still to this day want to grow up and be them. The ultimate in music coolness. A huge boost to my goal came last year when I met Doro Pesch at Bloodstock. She is an amazingly gracious woman and I was both humbled and inspired. When she gave me a hug, my spirits were renewed and I knew I was on the right path. I still wanna grow up and be just like her. After 25+ years in metal, Doro still looks amazing. She glows! Her voice is just as moving and powerful as it was in 1984 when I first heard her in Warlock. For one of her two USA dates supporting the release of her 2 DVD/CD set for  25 Years in Rock  Doro played in New York City at the Gramercy. I, of course, was there walking that fine line between working and rocking out. I struck a healthy balance. The night brought a very appreciative m

DOMAIN - The Chronicals of Love, Hate, and Sorrow

Image
What an amazing listen. This album has some blistering guitar work courtesy of one Axel Ritt. Axel is an amazing and technical guitar player. Axel has the deftness and fierceness of Paganini and the gravitas of Schubert. Unlike the snobbish nose-in-the-air guitar players, Axel is down to earth and quite approachable. So much so, he even offers online master classes to teach YOU how to shred the way he does! He's a true ARTIST! So onto DOMAIN's The Chronicals of Love Hate and Sorrow: The first impression I got was that this was part of the soundtrack to HEAVY MEAL, the 1981 film. The album is very atmospheric, quite solid with amazing vocals. At times, it reminds me of an extremely heavy metal STYX. The drumming is just sick. Thru and thru this album has high quality musicianship! "Sweeping Scars" is a mixture of epic 70s prog rock, metal, and Wagnerian opus. This music is at home in 2011, 1971 or 1871. The composition is operatic, sweeping, and monumental. T
