VOLBEAT 2011 Tour Dates

What can only be described as insanity, I've got the upcoming VOLBEAT tour dates for the rest of the year. The pace looks maddening! No rest for the wicked, I should say. There ARE dates for Ireland, Scotland, and England - as those were cancelled last year due to Michael's illness. Hopefully he and the rest of the band stay healthy enough to make the dates - hell, ALL the dates that have been booked. My advice: GO SEE THIS BAND LIVE! You won't be sorry. It's a darn good time. Great music. Loads of fun.

Doctor Who Magazine #436

Being a big fan of The Brigadier, I had to repost this! If you can get your hands on this issue - yippie!

DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE celebrates the life of NICHOLAS COURTNEY in a special 100-page bumper issue, packed with rare and never-before-published photos, dedicated to the man who played Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart for over 40 years. Among those paying tribute to the actor who played the Doctor’s most trusted friend are former Doctors TOM BAKER, DAVID TENNANT, SYLVESTER McCOY and COLIN BAKER.

“Once you got to know Nick, you loved everything about him,” Tom explains to DWM. “We were a double act. I loved everything he did. I would have loved him as Othello. All other critical faculties were abandoned. You just couldn’t explain yourself. It was almost like someone saying, ‘What an Earth do you see in her?’ or ‘What on Earth do you see in him?’ Once you actually love someone, you just love being with them – and I loved being with Nick.”

ALSO THIS ISSUE:

SALUTING THE BRIG
NICHOLAS PEGG sets the scene as friends and colleagues remember the life and times of Nicholas Courtney. The tributes include contributions from FRAZER HINES, WENDY PADBURY, PETER PURVES, JOHN LEVENE, RICHARD FRANKLIN, KATY MANNING, RUSSELL T DAVIES, DERRICK SHERWIN, TERRANCE DICKS, PHILIP HINCHLIFFE, GRAEME HARPER and many more.

NICHOLAS COURNEY – A LIFE IN ACTING
DWM looks back at Nick’s long career, from his early days in rep through to his most famous role as Lethbridge-Stewart in Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

THE ONE WITH THE EYEPATCH
Nicholas Courtney’s favourite Doctor Who story, 1970’s INFERNO, is put under the spotlight as THE FACT OF FICTION witnesses the end of the world…

SEVENTH HEAVEN
It was the season in which the Brig came into his own – the Third Doctor’s first series from 1970. DWM looks back to discover what made the season so special as COUNTDOWN TO 50 continues.

THE BRIG VS THE DOCTOR
The Brigadier’s decision to blow up the reptile people in 1970’s Doctor Who and the Silurians shocked the Third Doctor. But was Lethbridge-Stewart right to do what he did? TOBY HADOKE and JOHNNY CANDON discuss the pros and cons of the Brig’s most controversial action in A BATTLE OF WITS…

NUNS WITH GUNS!
The Doctor and Amy are shocked to find that the TARDIS has been harbouring a terrifying secret in the latest comic strip adventure! And there are more surprises in store in Part Two of APOTHEOSIS, written by JONATHAN MORRIS with art by DAN McDAID…

GAME ON!
THE TIME TEAM continues its mission to watch every episode of Doctor Who in order, and visit the year 200,000 – but what will Chris, Emma, Michael and Will make of the Ninth Doctor adventure, THE LONG GAME?

Dave Matthews Band Caravan in Atlantic City

The line up today was just ear bleeding awesomeness!! DAVE AND TIM!!!!!! Warren Haynes. Damian Marley AND.... another blistering set by DAVE MATTHEWS BAND!!!! I tried to send in a text/multiple text from the grounds today and it came out all michigosh. So, in English - here it is again!
Another lovely day in Atlantic City, NJ! The first stop on the DMB Caravan Tour. Three stages. Loads of bands. Finally an American band gets how to put on a proper European festival. Plenty of places to recycle. Brita water stations through out the grounds where you can get FREE water. Reasonably priced food - huge pizza slices! Perfectly grilled burgers. Even the weather is being festival friendly - big poofy white clouds, ocean breeze, loverly! Check out the tour as it winds its way to Chicago, New York and the famous Gorge in Seattle. Be sure to take a refillable water bottle!

There! LOL But it was a wicked day! Like I said - an American band got the feel and flow of a European festival right!!! Three stages. Plenty of toilets. Open space for walking, dancing, sitting under the sun. Pick nick tables. Three FREE Brita Hydration stations strategically located on the grounds. The sheer number of bottled water waste that was eliminated because of these stations will boggle the mind. Not bad considering 30-40 thousand people showed up. So if everyone bought a water.... the trash would be fierce. Yuck! But by teaming with Brita - DMB gave warehouse members a voucher for a free water bottle. You could win a water bottle at the Brita tent. Or bring one from home and enjoy FREE Brita Filtered water at one of the hydration stations.

I got geeked when Dave took the stage with Tim for an amazing gobsmacking acoustic set!!! By 8pm the crowd was ready - and the band showed up and left it all on the stage.

SETLIST:
Big Eyed Fish
Bartender
Why I Am
Write A Song
Crush
Break Free
Gravedigger
Alligator Pie
Dancing Nancies
Spaceman
Everyday
The Idea Of You
#41 (**** Tim and Warren traded off solos on this **** mondo wicked!)
Blackjack
Time Bomb
Stay
Encore:
Sister
Can't Stop
Two Step

The line up was killing. The space comfortable. FREE WATER!!!! Reasonably priced food (that was quite delish). What more could you ask for at a festival? And hey, not a lot of stupid drunk people either. Seriously!!! The idiot drunk factor was quite low! That was a pleasant surprise.

So if you can - catch the tour in Chicago July 8-10, New York, August 26-29 or up in Seattle at the Gorge September 2-4. You will have a blistering wonderful time!

'68 Winners Announced!!!

It's all done and dusted. The Zombies have been slayed. The pork product has been roasted. And rum was had by all!!!!! I've got the winners for the 10 REASONS WHY YOU ARE BETTER THAN A ZOMBIE contest. Just to recap. '68 is an awesomely groovy zombie comic by Mark Kidwell, Nat Jones, and Jay Fotos. They take your usual zombie fare and turns it on it's arse. Set during the Vietnam War, '68 freezes time in a sense. None of the cultural references go beyond February 13, 1968. The world stops. The zombies take over. It's one thing fighting a war. Another thing fighting zombies. But what if you have to fight BOTH AT THE SAME TIME???!!!!

Bob O. and Stephani N. won an autographed copy of Issue #1 of '68

The following are the best TEN REASONS WHY I AM BETTER THAN A ZOMBIE!

From Tanya P.

1. My brains aren't currently being attacked by microorganisms that will quickly degrade my thinking process and turn my brains into so much mush within hours.

2. My body also isn't disintegrating, which means that my leg won't fall off when I run, AND I'll be able to see what's coming. A zombie couldn't, the eyes go away pretty fast... SQUISH!!

3. Better complexion, even without Cover Girl ;)

4. I'm really REALLY good at shooting - a headshot wouldn't be a problem even at range. Zombies, what with the eyeballs dissolving, would have more problems handling firearms (let alone the whole hand falling off thing).

5. There is probably someone somewhere who wouldn't mind having sex with me - and a bonus - not vomiting afterwards. Whew!

6. If I eat, maggots aren't going to drop off me and into my food, which will allow the full flavor of the food to come out instead of being masked by the aroma of death and decay. The food isn't moving either, which could be good or bad, depending on your palate.

7. Speaking of stench, err, aroma, I don't smell like something dead. I smell pretty, thanks to soaps and so forth, plus I'm not a corpse. In fact I'm just going to place "personal hygiene" down here as whole.

8. I don't attract every raven, dog, insect, and other carrion eater within miles to my position every time I sit still. So animals aren't attempting to devour me pretty much constantly, AND I can hide! Yay for both!

9. I make one hell of a cup of coffee, my daughter can also, AND we can cook bacon to your specification! (obvious bribery to the judge happening here, please don't notice this...)

10. I'm working on a lightsaber. Really. Zombie attack? Lightsaber.

Matt B. winning entry:

1. I am vegetarian -(this makes me better than most people not just zombies ;)

2. If I bit you, you wouldn't turn into a zombie or catch anything as I'm quite healthy therefore not much of a risk in the bodily fluid department!

3. I don't smell all that bad (I do eat a lot of spicy food, so opinions do vary on this point)

4. I could be brought down quite successfully with a lot less than a head shot, so in the event that I do attack anyone (unlikely) i shouldn't be too hard to 'deal with'

5. I have asked people - 'would you rather have sex with me or a zombie?' all have said that in that situation (and only that situation) they would pick me!

6. I have a much more extended vocabulary than - 'uuurrrgg' or 'braaaaaaaains'

7. I generally retreat from the sound of gunfire.

8. I can open doors easily.

9. I change my clothes more often than zombies. Which means that I will be more up to date with current fashion trends.

10. Finally I recycle, I have never seen a zombie recycle. I think that's pretty shitty really. It doesn't take much and we should all do our bit!

Gabriel C says:

1: My breath smells great! No human remains between my teeth.

2: I always have money and mints to borrow. Zombs are notoriously known to be broke. And have nasty breath(see above)...

3: I am stocked: I have sugar AND kool-aid, peanut butter AND jelly, lighters AND gasoline... etc...

4: I am quick-witted. Duh. Continue reading...

5: My frozen dairy goodness attracts all the living impaired to the final solution of ridiculously awesome shredding of delicious flesh. This is a trick.

6: I have a job. Zombies don't really know how to represent, like I do. I smack down whack-ass perpetrators and shit, hold the set down fo' ma' peeps, I keep it real and represent like a boss, son. Zombies sit there like little retarded blind armless babies and moan & drool. They also bleed on everything, which I have failed to do in my entire life. Suck it, Zombies.

7: My comics are all in a neat and orderly fashion. These are my life, so must be treated as if they were a loving, little nerdy pet of mine. Only I get to take care of them. I trust no-one. Zombs care about one thing: my delicious brain. And they still would treat it like shit if they ever got their disgusting paws on it...

8: I am a chef, so I could be the one to create and bring all the new/recycled ideas of yummy goodness into the world once we are all devoured/and/or forced to sup upon the sweet, sweet nectar of goodness that which is HUMAN FLESH...

9: I shoot a mean game of pool. This said, my knowledge of basic geometry and angles far surpasses that of any dimwitted slow-walking brain-eater. Win.

10: I have watched nearly every episode of Night Court and Roseanne. Zombs don't even remember that shit, let alone half of America. My clever attempts to fool you all have succeeded. Suckers.

Mondo congrats to all the winners!!! Remember - you don't have to run fast, just faster than the next guy! LOL

RIVAL SONS !!! RIVAL SONS !!! RIVAL SONS !!!

As if I have not gushed enough about the best "new" band to come out of the US of frakking A!! Here is more: RIVAL FUCKING SONS!!!! Dudes! PRESSURE AND TIME comes out June 20th (June 26th in the USA). Do yourself a favour and pre-order it from here in the EU and from here in North America. The album is frakking boss!!! "Face of Light" closes the album and it gives me chills every time I hear it. It is without a doubt the best song written this year. You KNOW I LOVE "Pressure and Time" :D So here is more skinny from these absolutely groovilicious rockers!
Run over to Facebook and LIKE Rival Sons!!! You will not regret it! Best thing for your ears this summer!

Californian blues-rockers RIVAL SONS are preparing for the release of their new album, PRESSURE & TIME, which is due to be released next Monday, June 20th in Europe and on July 26th in North America.

The band have taken some time out ahead of the release to discuss the current rock scene in Los Angeles and the members' own experiences of being in a rock 'n' roll band in the City of Angels.

JAY BUCHANAN (vocals): "Los Angeles is as hungry as it's ever been. Because it is an undeniable hub for the industry, the city is rife with veterans, makers, fakers and rookies alike, but you can usually find one or two bands serving it hot. This is the way LA was when I found it and it'll be the same when I leave. The town is our nation's brothel of young musicians."

MICHAEL MILEY (drums): "I've been playing in the LA/Long Beach music scene for a bit. I've played and recorded with a lot of artists there, namely Bird, Veruca Salt, and Joe Firstman. The scene has changed greatly. There is almost an 'every man for himself' vibe, meaning barely any bands will play together and the audience won't stay for the other bands. People come to see the band they want to see, then leave. So there is no scene. It's a bummer."

ROBIN EVERHART (bass): "The general scene in LA is more 'be seen' than 'be heard'. And as a bass player who grew up in the Motown tradition - a tradition where the Funk Brothers weren't even recognized until the 'Standing in the Shadows of Motown' movie (and book before) came out only a couple of years ago - I wasn't really into it. Now that we've been doing it longer, we've found our niche of good clubs, with good promoters etc. - basically, making it what we want it to be."

SCOTT HOLIDAY (guitars): "There's a very eclectic music scene in LA... That said, there hasn't been a lot of actual 'rock 'n' roll'. I've played with a number of other groups and had other bands in LA that weren't rock 'n' roll, and I'm just grateful for the scene that exists - lots of clubs, parties, industry stuff, and show-goers - it's a good scene. Starting the Rival Sons was definitely an answer for me - to the lack of genuine rock 'n' roll happening in our scene and in the world in general. And over the last few years there definitely seems to be a resurgence happening. LA has been fantastic to us, and has received us (and rock 'n' roll) with open arms. There's still a lot for us to accomplish in our home town... We can sell out some of the classic venues, and have got the hipsters dancing, but there's still a few rooms we'd like to fill, and hips we'd like to get shaking."

PRESSURE & TIME is due to be released on CD and LP on June 20th in Europe and on July 26th in North America. The album will be available on iTunes on June 20th in Europe and on June 21st in North America.

'68 Hardship

The Hardships of War Include Zombies in Upcoming One Shot

Berkeley, CA – 8 June 2011 – The next zombie hit comes from none other than Image Comics, the publisher that introduced fans to the international best-selling hit THE WALKING DEAD. ’68: HARDSHIP is a stand alone story based in the grisly world that horror writer Mark Kidwell carved out in the first two issues of the ’68 miniseries. Along with gifted colorist Jay Fotos, guest artist Jeff Zornow (TYRANNOSAURUS REX, HACK/SLASH) illustrates the horrific details of this story about what happens to one soldier when he returns home.

“68: HARDSHIP is my return to the zombie/horror genre," Zornow explained. "This is the darkest zombie book I have ever illustrated. Brutal and to the point, this is a detailed description of the American nightmare, which opens the gates to an undead apocalypse!"

"They say you can’t go home again,” Kidwell commented. “And HARDSHIP proves that old adage in spades. We’re giving readers a look at the American heartland invaded by the hungry undead through the eyes of a battle-fatigued soldier who’s seen far too much horror. This book is dark, hardcore and doesn’t flinch."

In ‘68: HARDSHIP, a young soldier comes back home from Vietnam. However, seen through the eyes of one traumatized by battle and suffering from previously latent schizophrenia, Nebraska does not appear to be the gentle place of his memories. In fact, it appears to be a battleground teaming with the threats of enemy occupation… from both ‘Charlie’ and the undead. '68: HARDSHIP is a journey into a psychological realm of hallucination, violence and undead horror!

’68: HARDSHIP (ONE SHOT), a 32-page full color horror comic book, will be on sale August 24th for $3.99.

BUMP - another groovilicious offering from Mark Kidwell

BUMP by Mark Kidwell
is a ghost story with teeth. Thirty years ago, Sheriff Gil Lundy ended deformed serial killer Edgar Dill's bloody series of murders by turning a blind eye to justice and walling the wounded monster up in a decrepit farmhouse to die. Now, something has risen from the dust and shadow of the old Dill place, something evil, and hungry. Something that churns the skies over rural Alder County into a raging tempest and brings scream-inducing nightmares to the aging lawman and those who know what he did. There's a light on in Edgar Dill's playroom and dark, fanged things formed of crawling wood-flesh howl like band saws in hell from the trees. Bump is a full length novelization of Mark Kidwell's hit horror comic mini-series that expands the dark, violent tale to a whole new level of terror. Bump will get under your skin...and leave splinters on its way out.

Mark Kidwell is the author/illustrator of dozens of comic books and graphic novels. Primarily working in the horror genre, Mark has created such popular series as Bump, Frank Frazetta's Dark Kingdom (with Tim Vigil and Jay Fotos) and the ongoing Vietnam/Zombie epic, '68. In addition to his graphic work, Mark has designed creature special effects for such industry luminaries as Robert Kurtzman (KNB and Precinct 13 Entertainment), penned original screenplays and provided illustration for numerous fantasy gaming books. The expansion of Bump from comic book mini-series to full prose novel is his first literary release. He is currently hard at work on more.

Not to mention, Mark is just a super cool dude! So Kali Diaries says... check out his work! You won't be disappointed. You can get BUMP right here at our Amazon store!

Helldriver

This is a movie you've just GOT to see!!! OMG!!! I saw the trailer at the Phoenix Comicon and just roared! Space ash turns Japan into a zombie infested pit. A school girl with a chain saw is tapped to be the zombie slaying hero! Frak me! Gotta love it! It's directed by Yoshihiro Nishimura and stars Yumiko Hara, Eihi Shiina, Yurei Yanagi, Kazuki Namioka, Kentaro Kishi, Mizuki Kusumi, Minoru Torihada, and Guadalcanal Taka.

Hobo With A Shotgun

It's Rutger Hauer.
As a hobo.
With a shotgun!
A post apocalyptic splatter fest!
I read the "official" synopsis and it reads very pretty. Shiny even. But it's the trailer that makes it! Guns. Gratuitous violence. Darkness. Debauchery. Grime. Seediness. Guns. Hobo. Yep! Makes for a happy movie! And did I mention Rutger Hauer is in it?

Watch now OnDemand and in theatres June 10th!

Zombie Invasion of Phoenix

The undead are among us. Shambling, blood spattered cannibals roamed the streets of Phoenix during the Comicon on Memorial Day weekend. Your intrepid photographer braved the ravenous hordes to bring you these photos. They are not for the faint of heart. For the sake of safety, you can explore Zombies at '68. This is a fantastic new tome by the trio of Kidwell, Fotos, and Jones.
