'68 Zombies

I am a metal head.
I am also an uber geek.
Most would think the two would be light years (groan) apart. Immediately comes to mind is the groovy Iron Maiden Fanclub shirt that had the TARDIS on it. Not to mention Kirk Hammet of Metallica who has written a groovy book entitled Too Much Horror Business coming out October 1. I saw scads of Iron Maiden and Metallica shirts over the weekend at the Phoenix Comicon. Therefor, this is the perfect place to tell you all about '68. '68 is a Zombie/VietNam tome by the fabulous trio of Mark Kidwell, Jay Fotos, and Nat Jones. These guys frakking rock! I picked up issues 1 and 2 and read them on the tram home. I was absorbed! I went back the next day tweaked on Costa Rican coffee and Dr. Pepper and pledged my undying allegiance. Luckily, they didn't shoot me in the head!

Instead, they gave me five (5) signed copies of issue 1 to give away! All you have to do to get one is this... Much like I asked Ben Carter of EVILE and Jon and Thomas from VOLBEAT, I'm asking YOU....

Send your top 10 reasons to kalidiaries@yahoo.com along with your name and address (so I can send you the comic in case you win). The best 3 entries will win an autographed copy of Issue 1. If you can't think of any reasons why you are better than an un-dead cannibalistic shambling rotting almost but not quite totally unlike corpse, never fear! 2 lucky winners will be randomly drawn to win autographed copies of '68

not so small print 'coz even with my glasses on i wouldn't be able to read it: by sending me your address, you are opt-inning to receiving random post card updates from victoria anderson photography in the mail. you may also end up on my christmas card list. if you do NOT want to receive random groovy stuff snail mail style that is NOT a bill, please tell me in your entry and if you don't win, I'll shred your addy and you will never ever hear from me again :D

Phoenix Comicon

What a long and amazing weekend! I spent it at the Phoenix Comicon in loverly downtown Phoenix, AZ. It may have been hot outside, but inside the convention center was downright sizzling! The building itself had the sweet smell of popcorn permeating every hallway. It was heavenly! Panels by Max Brooks, Leonard Nimoy, George Takai, Adam Baldwin, Robert Duncan McNeill kept me busy and provided endless hours of side splitting funny. Zombies roamed the halls. Steampunk costumes and art filled my eyes. More super hero's that you can shake a stick at. I've got over 8GB of video and photos to transcribe and edit. So here is a nice little teaser video of the weekend! Come back often for Zombie Walks, updates on new movies coming out, what's happening in the TV sci-fi landscape, and photos of just the outrageous and sublime! Enjoy!

Adam Baldwin on Working with Stanley Kubrick

Adam Baldwin has had a long and interesting career in the movies. Many remember him as Jayne from Joss Wheedon's Firefly series. Others know him from his latest five seasons on CHUCK. Many know his work on the Jackie Chan Adventures as both Fin and Captain Black. Throw in D.C. Cab, Independence Day, and X-Files.... OMG! The man doth work! A superficially ingenious and witty Adam Baldwin shared a panel with Robert Duncan McNeill at the Phoenix Comicon over Memorial Day Weekend. Many stories were told. Many songs were sung. New Jersey got some luvin'!!! Follow Adam via his Twitter account.

December I Remember

December I Remember is the newest offering coming out of Gangi Films. It's creator, Joseph Andrew Gangi, had an impressive space at the Phoenix Comicon. I got a chance to speak with him about December I Remember. A teaser pdf file is being made available to fans for FREE on June 1st. Check out the FACEBOOK page at facebook.com/DIRemember.

James Hetfield / Justin Hunt ABSENT

ABSENT is the latest documentary by Justin Hunt. It explores the epidemic of fatherlessness in America. Justin takes a deep and emotion approach to discussing a complex problem - a problem largely ignored. ABSENT punctuates what happens when things get ignored, people get ignored, swept under the carpet, become invisible. ABSENT is not for the faint of heart. I wanted to to go in with no preconceptions. I didn't read what my friends said about previous screenings. I didn't watch the trailers. I wanted to have an open mind.

I made the trek down University Ave from ASU to Central Christian Church in Mesa - Justin Hunt's church. The auditorium sat about 1800 people. I thought it was overkill, but people kept coming in. And more and more followed! By the time the lights went down, the auditorium was 85-90% full. I have sense found out that the auditorium sold out with over 2000 in attendance. Only a small handful in the stock uniform of the Metallica fan - fanclub t-shirt or tour shirt. Oh yeah, Papa Het is in the documentary and attended the screening with a Q&A afterwards.

Having sat thru the movie and pondered a while, the moniker "Papa Het" seems a bit ironic. James Hetfield - father figure to many - had an absent and distant father and readily admits he had a lot of unanswered questions about becoming a MAN. He admits he's felt like a loser and that he was on his own. ABSENT explores his desire to be a better man and a better father to his own children and by default an iconic father figure to the thousands in MetClub and millions more fans around the world.

The movie explores a central theme: The father is the first person to choose or not choose you. You'll always know your mother loves you, but both boys and girls look for validation from their fathers. When children begin asking those critical questions.. Am I worthy? Do I have value? What is my place in life? ... What happens when they get abuse or worse, silence. Justin Hunt doesn't offer any easy answers. He just shows the deleterious impact emotionally unavailable fathers and absent fathers have not only on the children they leave behind, but on the adults they become.

James' Q&A after the screening This is the extended audio only Q&A James had after the screening. In it he discusses his Christian Science upbringing, the resources he utilizes as a father, how music saved his life, and how he approaches fatherhood.

"There's no hurry to rush into being a father. Be a kid and grow. Experience life. Go screw up and learn from it. Check that off. Well, that didn't work. It's not easy. None of this is easy. It's gonna take some work and some failure and some getting back up. Falling down and getting back up again. So everyone is going thru that, you're not alone. It is there. It is in you and looking everywhere outside for it is part of the adventure, but it lives within you already and it's been placed there by your higher power." - James Hetfield: 2011 May 12

"The gratitude list is certainly a help in that department too. At 17 I was certainly not grateful for anything I had. You could see it in the fog of growing up. That's pretty much what I remember of my childhood, like a big fog. You know and I needed help, people to guide me through that fog. And I had no idea there were people to help me until later... There are things that happen life and they effect in many different ways. (sic) The baggage is not (yours). (Your)name is not on it. Leave it at the station." - James Hetfield: 2011 May 12

On the song FADE TO BLACK "For me it went away when people started telling me that they liked that song. You're not supposed to like that song. It's a horrible song. It's about me wanting to end my life because there is nothing there. There's this big black, I just see blackness. I see a darkness and that's all I saw. And then people tell me they liked that song it turned to gray and slowly lightened up. It was a bunch of us that could get together and shine some light on the darkness." - James Hetfield: 2011 May 12

Pressure and Time by RIVAL SONS

Some days I just really love my job!!! First I get the new video by The Soulless. And now I get the new video by RIVAL SONS!!! Really???!!!! How amazing is this. OK - for this track you need a pole, some daisy dukes, and some candies. If you are under the age of 30 you may have no frakking idea what I'm talking about.... So in kiddie speak! A stripper pole, short shorts, and stripper high heel shoes (preferably with see thru wedge heels). OH YESH! I would don this atrocious outfit just to shake my groove thang to this fucking song!!!!

The vocals oooze with a sweaty sexuality. The bass line is 110% masculinity. The drumming...??? Has John Bonham returned to the building? OH YESH!!! This song screams "take me baby, take me hard." I can not frakking wait for this album to drop! Pre-order the album here: Pressure And Time or here thru iTunes.

If you are throwing a house party, you need this on your turntable (showing my age again). If you are on a long road trip, you need this album in your cd player. If you intend to get laid anytime this year... YOU NEED THIS ALBUM!!!!!!

Do I like this band? Oh, hella yeah, I like this band!!!!!

The Soulless "Unaltered"

BANG HEAD!!!!!!!

Can I get a holy fuck????!!!!!!! Oh yesh!!! The Soulless is amazing!!! If you don't buy ISOLATED when it comes out, you are a fucktard. Really, you are. This is gonna be the most kick ass album of the year and you MUST own it!!!

Soulless to release new album ISOLATED

You wouldn't expect to get such a hard driving thrashy type metal band from Bath, UK. Yeppers. THAT Bath. Home of Roman well, baths, and abbey, some great ice cream, spas, underground springs, breezes, a groovy bridge, and scads of tourists. Nestled in this ideal beauty The Soulless was born. Signed to Earache Records, The Soulless will release new album ISOLATED on May 16h (June 7th in North America). This album is a definite buy!!!! It's a 4 star out of 5 star deal-lee-yo! It's an Isaac your bartender double finger point! It's a 1976 Dodge Charger! If you don't want the low down on this awesome album STOP READING NOW!! Run on over to facebook and LIKE them. Then buy the album when it comes out!

If you are still reading, that means.... SPOILERS!!!!!! LOL
The short version: The Soulless' new offering ISOLATED is mostly late romantic period music with flourishes of renaissance (the instrumental pieces) with Paganini inspired late baroque/early classical leanings.

That's wot you get for asking a music major to review an album!!!! LMAO!!!!

But seriously, metal/thrash - nothing new. It's been done before! HUNDREDS of years before. The Soulless is just doing it damn good!! Yeh, the vocals are your stock cookie monster growly type deal. You get hints of Metallica-esque riffs. Some spitfire, intricate Charlie Benante drumming. More key changes than you can shake a stick at! The guitar runs would bring a tear to Nicolo Paganini's eye. This is where the Soulless truly shines... on guitar! It's out of this world! All the songs are wonderfully put together! It is truly an amazing wall of sound.

"The Path", to my ears, has an Yngwie Malmsteen inspired guitar work. Again - the influence of Paganini is HEAVY!! Did I mention the guitar work was amazing? The song propels you forward, it's always moving. I don't know what key it's written in, but it's a "happy" key. The song makes you smile and headbang and dance around the room. So much about this song is just "right" in terms of how to write a metal song. It's classical / boroque with melody and wicked key and time changes.

"Earthbound" is circle pit worthy! Nuff said.

"13th Morning" is 74 seconds of renaissance beauty.

"Clones" starts out with beautiful renaissance guitar runs, polyharmony at its finest. 35 seconds in, their is this ear bleeding stacatto guitar riffage. It then breaks out with circle pit intensity. The song is very punctuated, almost as if the guitars have their own vocals to sing. The ending is totally awesome. There is so much to listen to in terms of textual variety and intricacy.

"You Are Nothing to Me" is another acoustic renaissance piece.

"New Perspective", "Revelation", and "Without Heart" are more of the same. The songs are paced. Each song continues the dramatic continuity closely related to the late romantic period.

so if you like circle pits, head banging, searing guitar riffage, and excellent drumming - THE SOULLESS and their new album ISOLATED is definitely for you!

Celebrate May 16!!!! International Metalhead Day

There are International days for almost everything, there is no reason we shouldn’t have our own.

We are the most loyal music fans ever! We have kept Metal alive for almost 40 years: we buy albums and t-shirts, we go to concerts and festivals, and we run websites and webzines. Some of us are in bands, famous ones sometimes, others are fans, but all of us share the same passion and the same culture that makes us METALHEADS!

The date was not chosen randomly: it corresponds the day the great Ronnie James Dio passed away. Not only will we celebrate our culture but we will also remember Ronnie James Dio and express the love and respect we have for him.

On May 16th YOU DECIDE how to celebrate. You can:
- Play Metal all day long (Most of you always do, anyway)
- Wear your favorite band’s t-shirt to work /School (Don’t wear a clothes that might get you fired or expelled)
- Organize a concert or a party… etc

On May 16th we want the whole world to know that WE EXIST and that BEING A METALHEAD IS NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF, ON THE CONTRARY, IT ROCKS!

May 16th International Metalheads

In his first book, Life on Planet Rock, author Lonn Friend shared his ringside view of rock’s decade of decadence. Now, in Sweet Demotion, the veteran rock scribe takes off the gloves and battles himself. Lonn was enjoying a six-figure multi-media career in 1998 when, at the end of a four-year run as a record company VP, he was “bitch slapped by the Universe”; his professional ride came to a crashing pause. But instead of hiring headhunters or putting a resume together to find another gig, Lonn hit the rock-and-roll road less traveled. The result is a brutally transparent, shamelessly self-deprecating mid-life memoir of a writer who stopped making money and started seeking truth. Sweet Demotion chronicles a thirteen-year period of personal deconstruction, spiritual madness, and bizarre anecdotal wordplay where faith was lost in everything but the moment and the music. Lonn’s intimate adventure invites the reader to a porn burial in the desert, a Janis Joplin ghost sighting, a Dallas meditation on the anniversary of JFK’s assassination following the interview of a heavy metal legend, and the sharing of sacred space on a northeast lake with the lead singer of Aerosmith. Sweet Demotion is a sojourn to near-enlightenment that no one but Lonn Friend could have possibly experienced.

Lonn is an extraordinary gentleman... yep a TRUE gentleman! He's an amazing writer and has perused and commented on some of my writing. He's made me a better writer and a better see-er. Yep... see-er is a word. Coz now I SEE things more clearly and can write about them better. LOL Buy Lonn's book coz I said so! -hugs-
