Big 4 in Photos

Yes, I went to the Big 4 show in Indio, CA. Yes, it was an amazing time. Metallica show #49 for me. Yes it's a bit of a low number. I weep at that. LOL I purchased the VIP tickets and was "impressed" by the poshness of the lounge area. We had a water feature. Yes, at a metal show there was a lovely water feature that would make Alan Titchmarch proud. I also availed myself of the sofas. Yes, Slayer. Metallica. Comfy Sofas. It fits. As for the actual VIP pit. Never got near it. The inept staff and non-existent signage made sure of that. Plenty of non English staff grunting about entering the field thru the exit corral and exiting the field thru the entrance corral. But not one of them pointed and in good broken english said the entrance to the VIP pit was along a wall. All I saw when I arrived was people and field. No barricade. No VIP pit area. $100 FAIL!!!! What I did see are a gaggle of other photographers. Prams. Guys with slicked up hair-dos. And lots and lots of kids. Apparently if you were under 5 years old, you got in free! That made one little Slayer fan very VERY happy as he boogied his pamper off during Angel of Death!!!!

Megadeth were tight as usual. Dave has some totally bitchin' guitar riffage. From where I stood (not in the VIP pit area) the drumming was pretty choice too. The sound was a bit hinkey and he even stated that there were a few technical problems. But it didn't stop them from making my ears bleed! Love Megadeth live! Slayer was joined onstage by Jeff Hanneman for the last two songs. It's good to see him playing, if only for a little while. The headliner was some little local band from San Francisco. Metal-something? Metalli-something. Yeh. I think they will go far! They opened with a crowd sing along which everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy. They even had fireworks!

Because nothing says HEAVY METAL like a ferris wheel and pink and purple parasols!

Studying to Megadeth makes you smarter! Trust me on this!!

Nap time. He's getting his second wind between bands.

Orion from Indio, CA's Big4 show!!!

Hard to pick the best song of the night. But I'm choosing ORION just because I played it for my bass jury in college and got a B. Rob is much much better! LOL

Interviews with VOLBEAT, Collapse, Mikko Siren, Prosevere, and Carey Elwes

Full length interviews with Volbeat's Jon and Thomas about the DIY approach to the music business and illumination. Insightful interview with Andrew Ongley of Collapse about the DIY approach to the music business and why it's important to have your hand in everything... are you sensing a pattern? LOL A great talk with Carey Elwes on the SAW films. Prosevere's Matt Riley on what the band is up to now. A favourite of mine, Mikko Siren of Apocalyptica on blue speedos. As usual, the issue is chock full of photography - by me of course! With two full pages dedicated to "What Metal is...."

"FALLEN" by VOLBEAT 2011April11

Enjoy one of my favourite VOLBEAT songs: "FALLEN" recorded in Mesa, AZ on April 11, 2011.

10 Reasons Why VOLBEAT are Better than Zombies!!

Screaming fans. The adoration of Thousands. Music. Flashing Lights. It's good to be a rock star. Or is it? What's never seen is the hundreds of man hours that go into giving the crowd 90minutes or so of bliss. VOLBEAT have cut a swath across the United States wowing crowds and winning converts. There seems to be no in between - either you love this band or you just don't get it. I LOVE THIS BAND!!!! Four albums into what promises to be a stunning career; Jon, Michael, Anders, and Thomas keep bringing their unique, quirky, lively, danceable, headbangable, groovable, toe tapping, ear bleeding, sing-a-long, FUN music to the masses. It's fresh and different in an industry that perpetuates cookie cutter mediocracy and one dimensional stereotypes. VOLBEAT shatters preconceptions of rock and roll!

I had a totally awesome interview with Thomas Bredahl and Jon Larsen before their gig in Mesa, AZ. I loved the band's music before the interview. After the interview I loved the "band". I have mad respect for the guys and their work ethic. You can get the full interview in Volume 1 Issue 3 of Victoria Anderson Photography: Travels in Wonderland.

Here Jon and Thomas extol the 10 REASONS WHY VOLBEAT ARE BETTER THAN ZOMBIES!!!!!

10. We can outrun a Zombie.

9. We don't lose our skin while running.

8. A Zombie is dead and we're slightly alive.

7. We're in less movies than Zombies. Been way more Zombie movies than Volbeat movies.

6. We smell a little bit better, not much. Hopefully a little.

5. Zombies are real stupid. They behave the same way. The four of us don't go for the same thing. We're like four individuals.

4. A Zombie probably has one thing on its mind: food. We might have two or three things: Food, Beer, and Sex.

3. We're still alive. That's where a lot of magic happens. You get different points of view an you get different interests.

2. We don't have a guy called Rob Volbeat... there is a guy called Rob Zombie.

And according to Jon Larsen and Thomas Bredahl, the Number 1 reason why VOLBEAT are better than Zombies......

1. None of us is called "BUB"

Bonded By Blood: Band Shake Up and Tour Dates

BONDED BY BLOOD have announced that BRANDON GULLING (MALUS REX, AVENGER OF BLOOD) and BEN BENNET (SMOG, WARBRINGER) will be filling in on the tour for amicably departing members ALEX LEE (guitar) and JERRY GARCIA (bass) respectively.

Remaining BONDED BY BLOOD members CARLOS REGALADO, JUAN JUAREZ and MAURO GONZALEZ have released the following statement:

"Bonded By Blood has gone through so many changes in the last couple of years while playing amazing festivals, touring the entire United States, Europe and Canada dozens of times, and enjoying the time with new and old friends and fans all over the world who mean the most to us. We first lost our original bass player, Ruben Dominguez back in 2009, then singer Jose Barrales left the band in 2010, but each was replaced with new members and the group marched on. Now, we regret to announce that Alex Lee (guitar) and Jerry Garcia (bass) are also stepping away from BBB. We will miss them just as much as we miss Ruben and Jose, and this band will not be the same without them, but the three of us that are left in Bonded By Blood hope that everyone who enjoys this band can understand that changes are inevitable. As much as we want to keep an 'original line-up', things happen that you just can't control.

"We hope all our friends, fans and fellow musicians can still give us the warm welcome we always received and still support us in these hard times while we rebuild the band as we all need all the support we can get. Thankfully, some new friends stepped up and are working hard to help us do the Sepultura tour, so big thanks to Ben Bennet (from Smog and formerly Warbringer) and Brandon Gulling (of Malus Rex and the recently reformed Avenger of Blood), who will be filling in on bass and rhythm guitar respectively while we keep together what is left of Bonded By Blood. We hope to see you all on the road again; it's not going to be the same without our old friends up there with us... But shit happens."

ALEX LEE comments:

"With Jose leaving the band followed by my own parting, I want to assure you all that it is not a coincidence, nor is it a fluke. Being a guitarist, I have always been interested in playing other styles of music and not only thrash. Don't get me wrong, I love my thrash music, but I honestly see myself being suited better with another band or type of music than what I have been doing with Bonded By Blood. It has been one of the hardest decisions of my life, due to the fact that this was the first band that I was in or established, but now I feel that it's my time to move on and to continue my progress on a new path. I wish Bonded the best of luck and I know they can succeed. As for the fans, I know they won't truly understand, they can either hate me or follow me, but I hope they will continue listening to and seeing Bonded live, for I believe that they will hold strong for years to come. You guys were the best and thanks for the great years!"

JERRY GARCIA comments:

"Being part of Bonded By Blood for almost two years now has been the best experience of my life. I've seen and done things that I could have only dreamed of. I had the honor of sharing the stage with some of the most talented musicians in the world, including the ones in my band. Everything I experienced will be something that I will cherish for a lifetime. However, as time goes by and life begins to unfold, certain things begin to become very evident and downright inevitable. Bonded By Blood is more than just a band, it's a spirit and it transcends any single individual person or band member.

"I want to thank each and every single one of you that ever supported me and the guys in doing what we do best in life, and that is music. There is no better feeling in the world than to bring happiness to someone through music. It is an incredibly humbling experience that I never took for granted. I am not sad, nor am I disappointed in my departure from the band. I see it as a fresh start to another chapter in my random life. As for me... Well, I'll be around - music is something that is essential to my life. I cherished the good, learned from the bad and realized that in life, 'the only constant is change'.

"One last thank you to everyone that showed me kindness on and off the road, so thanks to Juan, Carlos, Alex, Mauro, Marco, Talita and the rest of the Earache gang including Anthony, every band I toured with, and most of all the fans! See ya!"

SLAYER without Jeff Hanneman is now a reality. He's made an announcement today, April 01, 2011 that he's decided to leave the band. Far from being an April Fools Joke he says:

"In what is probably the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, I have decided to part company with Slayer. You can imagine how difficult this was for me to do, what with Slayer being such a big part of my life for like thirty years, but due to my problems with my arm, I’ve been left with little other option. I’d just like to say thank you so much to the guys for helping me a part of something so important and amazing, and also a huge thanks should go to you, the fans, for all the support you’ve given me over the years. Thanks again guys! You rule!"

From the Slayer camp:

"We are completely saddened by Jeff’s decision to leave the band after so long, but we don’t want him to rush his recovery, which has suffered another setback recently. He’s more than just a guitarist, as I think our fans will agree, and Slayer just won’t be the same without him. Thank you Jeff.

"Of course the question on everybody’s minds now is what are we gonna do? Obviously we’ve got our tour dates coming up soon which Gary (Holt, Exodus guitarist) and Pat (O’Brien, Cannibal Corpse guitarist) have graciously agreed to be a part of, but the long term future of the band remains a mystery even to us."

Cannibal Corpse guitarist Pat O'Brien will fill in on the upcoming Slayer dates in Europe, more Big 4 dates, and a tour with Rob Zombie.
